GDT Aurora Davison Using Mepxy Markers and Schmincke Inks

Hi everyone,

 This is my next free tutorial using the wonderful Mepxy Brush Markers and The Schmincke Aerocolor Ink and refillable Liner.

  For this project I used a 10 x 12" primed canvas board which I covered with old sheet music (found in a second hand book store) using matte medium and allowed it to dry. Next I used a light pink/coral ink on the edges and while still wet added Pebeo Studio Acrylic paint in Titanium White and used an old plastic card to lightly cover the board so the sheet music shows through the paint.

   

  This is not meant as a step by step drawing lesson but gives you an idea of how she was drawn. For the face I started with a circle and marked the centre and a line 1/3 down from it - this is the eye line. Next drew the curve of the face (centre) down to the chin line and added the neckline. Next I drew in the side eye and the side line of the face. In this image the cheek is too far down and I later gave her a 'cheeklift'. Then I added in the extra features. The mouth is only partially drawn as it is somewhat hidden in a 3/4 face.

The finished drawing with hair added and the guide lines erased. The cheek on the side has been lifted also.

Hint: Take a photo of your drawing as it helps to see the proportions better - hence why the cheek line was altered as it was 'wrong' at first.

Image transferred to the board using tracing paper.

Colour in the skin with Mepxy Brush Marker W31 - Bridal Skin. Do not worry too much about any streaking, this will be smoothed out later.

Colour in the mouth and corners of the eye with Mepxy Brush Marker R02 - Light Peach.

Colour in the contours/shadows of the face and neck with Mepxy Brush Marker N01 - Wood Ash.

Further darken using Mepxy Brush Marker N05 - Sand Storm.

Now take a make-up sponge dampened with some rubbing alcohol (easily bought at chemists and supermarkets) and gently smooth out all the streaks. She now has an almost ghostly but ethereal look to her.

Colour in the eyes with Mepxy Brush Marker L95 - Pale Olive and add (remove) highlights with the Mepxy Brush Marker 00 - Colorless.

Draw in the hair highlights with Mepxy Brush Marker N05 - Sand Storm.

Colour in the rest of the hair, and darken the eyes and eyebrows with Mepxy Brush Marker W37 - Chocolate.

Again smooth the streaks with rubbing alcohol on a damp (not wet) make-up sponge.

The rubbing alcohol can also be used to completely wipe the image away in case you wish to start over.

The image was further enhanced with Faber-Castell Gelatos and Prismacolor Pencils.

The white highlights where drawn with a Schmincke Aerocolor Liner #3 (it has a 2-6mm chisel tip which allows fine and thick lines). I filled this with Schmincke Aerocolor 101 - Supra-White.

I finished the painting with stencilling in various shades of Pebeo Studio acrylics.

A Fairy Fantasy With Schmincke Ink

Fantasy Fairy painted with Schmincke Aero Color Inks

Here are the materials I used for this project

30cm X 30cm primed canvas panel

PVA Craft and Hobby Glue (mine is from Portacraft)

Schmincke Aero Color Inks in Brazil Bown, Cyan, Magenta and White

Spray bottle of water

Assorted Princeton brushes, flat and round, 

Diggers Isopropyl Alcohol Spray

Reference photo to the fairy (optional)

Canson drawing paper

Canson tracing paper

2H Graphite pencil

Heavy dark Graphite pencil

Schmincke Aquarell masking Fluid

Gesso

Derwent Graphitint Pencil in Port

Baby Wipes

Fine Black permanent marker

White, Gold, Pink gel pens

White and Gold Acrylic Paint

Step 1: To get some texture onto your canvas, first create some swirls with your craft glue and let it dry. Spray the canvas with a water, then add some splotches of Schmincke Aero Colour ink using the dropper, I used Brown and Cyan.

Step 2: Spray extra water if required and move your canvas around to get some interesting patterns.

Step 3: Spraying your ink with Diggers Isopropyl Alcohol Spray can also give some interesting effects (note how the brown in the centre has gone a bit speckly). Use a brush to move the ink to the edges of the canvas if desired.

Step 4: Next I added some splotches of white Shmincke Ink and moved the canvas around to spread it as well as using brush until I was happy with the pattern.

Step 5: Whilst your background is drying its time to draw your figure. I like to draw freehand using a photo reference, but you could trace a picture or just use your imagination. I am creating my sketch using a 2H Graphite pencil on Canson Drawing Paper.

Step 6: When my drawing was complete I went over it with a fine Black marker and then traced it onto Canson Tracing Paper. I used a dark heavy graphite Pencil and drew heavily on the BACK of my tracing. Then I placed my sketch (Graphite side down) where I wanted it on my canvas. I used a ball point pen, pressing firmly, to trace over my sketch again and transfer the graphite to my canvas.  If the lines are very faint just go over them again so you can see then well enough to paint your figure (I like to use soluble Derwent Graphitint pencil for this).

Step 7: Here I am doing some circles in the wings with the Schmincke Aquarell Masking Fluid.

Step 8: Next I have taken a fine brush and some gesso and blocked in my figure. I am using the Graphitint pencil (the colour is Port) to begin to add some shadow and colour. Because it is water-soluble it will activate with the gesso.

Step 9: More work with the gesso, see how I have created texture with the brush strokes to detail to the wing. Make sure your asking Fluid is dry before you paint over it.

Step 10: To begin painting the figure I have used a mixture of Brown, White and Magenta Schmincke Aero Colour Inks for the skin tone. You can use a small palette to mix the colours, but they will also mix together beautifully on the canvas.

Step 11: I am adding more white ink where the skin would be lighter and leaving it darker where there would be shade.

Step 12: For the hair I am also using Brown and Magenta inks and blending them on the canvas..

Step 13: I am using the  same colours for the wings, but in different qualities, so she will be beautifully monochromatic.

Step 14: I've added some Gesso to the back ground.

Step 15: Then softened if off by using a baby wipe to remove some of the paint.

Step 16: I am using a fine tip, permanent Black marker to add in some detail to the face and hair.

Step 17: Next I have rubbed off the masking fluid and used a White Signo Uniball gel pen to add some detail and hi-light to the wings, face and hair.

Step 18: Lightening up the skin a bit more with white ink.

Step 19: Going back in again with Black marker to define areas on the face, body, hair and wings.

Step 20: Now I want to create some shadow on the ground where she is sitting so she does't look like she is floating in mid air. I am using the Brown ink.

Step 21: Adding Blue ink and blending with the Brown creates shades of green.

Step 22: I used the Graphitint Pencil to draw in the wine glass and bottle. I used magenta ink for the red  wine, and added hi-light to the glass with the white gel pen.

Step 23: I've added more magenta ink to the edges of the wing. To make the shades or purple in the background (see on the left) I've used magenta and cyan inks. The brown and cyan have made the extra dark areas in the background.

Step 24: I am wanting her face to stand out a bit more so i am using some white acrylic paint to really hi-light the area around her face. I've used Gold Gel pen to draw in jewellery and crown.

Step 25: Finally a little bit of Pink gel pen on the lips. Some Gold acrylic paint and a really fine Princeton brush to really make those jewels stand out, and some white gel pen to hi-light. There is also a little gold gel pen on the glass and bottle to show them glowing the the light.

Mixed Media Girl

When you are working in journals or creating your own mixed media work it is so much fun to incorporate collage into your art piece. One of my favourite ways to do this is to re-use my own art.

My Mixed Media Girl

Step 1: For this project I have taken my Mexpy Marker Portrait and photocopied it on normal copy paper with my home ink jet printer. You  can refer to my previous blog here for a tutorial on how to colour a face with Mexpy markers.

Step 2: Cut around the area you want to collage and glue it down in your chosen position using matte medium. I cover both the back and front of my piece to be collaged with the medium and an old flat brush.

Step 2

Step 3: I am envisioning  this new girl will be wearing something decorative in her hair so I have painted an area of gloss gel where this decoration will be and also glued in some sequins.

Step 4: I've used a 2H Graphite Pencil to sketch in where I think her hair and body will be.

Step 5: I've used a Matte acrylic craft paint in a Alizarin Crimson to layer in where I imagine shadow would fall on her dress.

Step 6: To colour the dress I have used Pebeo160 Vitrea paint, Glossy Pimento Red. I am using this paint because it gives a beautiful, luminous glossy look that you probably can't really appreciate in a photo, but is just gorgeous. Go over the entire area including the area you shaded with acrylic paint.

Step 7: Use the Pearl Outliner to draw in lines to indicate hair. Let dry for 15 minutes or so before painting.

Step 8: For the hair colour I mixed together Turquoise and Black Pebeo 160 Vitrea Glossy paints. The nature of this paints is to really show the brush strokes so make sure you go in the direction that the hair would be going. I also used this colour to change the colour of the iris, and add a bit of deeper shadow to areas of the dress.

Store left over paint in a small dish cover with plastic wrap in case you want to use it again later.

Step 9: For the hair decoration of have used Pebeo Vitrea frosted colours in Rose Pink and Sky. I have used a round brush and short brush strokes to indicate petals. The sequins became the centre of the flowers.

Step 10: To redden the lips I used Pebeo Vitrea Marker in Glossy Pepper Red

Step 11: I've decided I want to add back some detail on the dress. Because the Pebeo Vitra is quite translucent, I've put some liquid gesso down first, this will ensure the decoration really pops!

Step 12: I'm now using the Pebeo Vitrea Markers to add in finer detail. I am using Mint to add leaves and Pepper Red around the flowers on the dress.

Step 13: Using the Pink and white Pebeo Vitrea again to add colour into the flowers. I just sort of dabbed it on using the small round brush.

Step 14: Using the Sandalwood Green Marker to add more colour to the hair decoration.

Step 15: Use the Black Pebeo Marker to add more detail in the hair piece and also to add a bit more colour deviation to the hair, especially close to the face where there would be shadows.

Step 16: Use the Black Pebeo marker to darken the lash line, pupils and draw in lashes. I've also used a brown Prismacolour pencil (Espresso) to darken the eyelid crease, the eyebrows and a bit of shadow on the neck.

Step 17: Use the Gold Outliner to add an earring and details to the decoration on the dress.

Step 18: Use Gesso and a Light Pink Matte Acrylic Paint for the background. Instead of just painting it on, use a vertical dabbing motion with a stencil brush, and the pointy end of a brush to get different textures. I am also going onto my girl with paint, I want to give the impression of snow falling onto her.

Step 19: I've used a Signo Green Gel Pen to add some fine detail like veins into the leaves and a White Signo to whiten the centre of the flowers. I've used a fine black marker pen to add detail into the flowers on the dress.

Step 20: When the background had dried I have used a soft large round brush (like a mop brush) with watered down Schminke Ink in Brown to add colour. Be careful when you are doing this, have a paper towel ready as you don't want the ink to run where it's not supposed to.  I also used the White ink straight from the dropper to add splotches of white and a little bit of Magenta and White inks mixed together to gain back some pinky colour into the background. She's finished.
