Spice up the White - Porcelaine Paints With Pebeo

With a little Pebeo Porcelain Paint you can spice up a white mug this xmas as a personal little handmade gift idea.
I myself am not a fan of white mugs, I had to purchase some just for this tutorial! I collect bright coloured funky mugs! So how does one turn a boring old white mug into something fun and personal!

With alphabet stickers of course! and some various colours of the Pebeo Porclaine paints! I grabbed some cheap alpha stickers from the Reject Shop for $2.00

I did my pet name from my husband and also my initials I grabbed a stippling brush and also my palette, poured some of the colours I wanted to use and started bouncing my round stippling brush onto the mug. Super easy and simple!
I completely clean the mugs to make sure there is no residue on the mugs so the paint has a clean surface to work with.
TIP - Apply the stickers to your clothes first before putting onto the mug to allow some of the stickyness to be muted, so when it comes time to remove your alphabets it wont be such a huge pain.

I did test how the stippled dots would look on a spare piece of card before applying to the mug, to make sure I was happy with how it turned out.
This Blog post is also a lesson for you if you get to the end of your project and you hate it...I remade this cup 5 times before I settled on a design, you will see some of the ok attempts! REMEMBER NOTHING IS SET IN STONE UNTIL YOU BAKE IT!

I used red and white paint and also mixed the two to make a soft pink, I also used a q-tip to add little red polkadots to the design.
Using a pin I removed the stickers, you may need to use some Methylated spirits to sharpen your edges if you so wish! I used a fine brush with the metho to work the edges.

another way you can add colour, is using sponges and bouncing thin washes of colour to your mug.
I used primary colours and a sponge and pounced the sponge onto the mug to give a softer effect...then I decided I wanted to create a cute watermelon inspired mug so started..yet again.

Using the same sponge technique I bounced red and green onto my mug over my alphabet stickers

once I was happy I then used a black pebeo porcelain paint pen, and drew on little sporadic seeds. The lovely little mug now holds my current fave washii tapes on my desk!

If you create a mug design and you aren't in love with it, a paper towel and methylated spirits will remove your work, and you can start again! just because you failed once doesn't mean you've ruined your mug! Like I said nothing is set in stone unless you've baked it.

Let your creations dry for a full 24 hours before baking.
150 degree oven for 25 mins, I turn the oven off and leave the door open for the mugs to cool.
I hand wash all my handmade things just to be on the safe side!

I hope you enjoyed this little quick fun tutorial, and remember everything can be fixed.
seeya next week.

Guest Designer Cindy Porter -Stylish Storage

Hi everyone, I am thrilled to be here with you today.

I have a 12x12" pizza box that I decorated to share with you all, showcasing the Pebeo Studio Acrylics colour paints and the Catalyst wedges...

I began by applying some modelling paste through a stencil... a little difficult to see, but I just wanted to create a base texture...

I then used the Catalyst Contour C-81 with some Oriental Violet, Primary Cyan, Verdnese Green, Cadmium Yellow Medium, Studio Acrylics...

I swiped the wedge down the box, and repeated the process until it was all coloured...

Once this had dried, I applied some more modelling paste using the Catalyst Wedge W-02 to create some fabulous texture over the box....

I was particularly careful to ensure not to apply the modelling paste to the stencilled area...

Once dry I sponged on some more of the Primary Cyan and the Verdnese Green onto the edges and the corners of the box...

Next I used some of the Schmincke Tro-Col-Bronze Dry Gouache in Rich Gold.... As the name suggest this is a dry product, it is a powder... I mixed it with a little water and magic!! so lovely and rich...

I painted over the stencilled area...

 doesn't it look fabulous....

I also added a little to the corners and edges as well...

I love it... love working with it... so easy to use and so effective...

the finished box...

Now storing some of my current work in style...

Thanks for joining me here today,
happy creating,

Porcelaine 150 Paint on Mugs.....

Hello all!

I have a quick share today showing a couple of mugs, I personalised and gave away as a little gift for my In-laws recently. It made a nice inexpensive gift which I filled with fruit and nuts in the end, and they were well received!

I started with some very simple mugs. and I used the black fine .7 point Porcelaine 150 Pen.

There are many Art Stores around that sell these Pens and Paints, and Spotlight carry them also.

They work like a regular paint marker, in that you have to prime the tip before drawing.  This is easy to do by depressing the felt tip nib to get the paint to come out and flow freely.  I usually just do this on a piece of scrap plastic transparency or the like.  You might have to do this each time you use it if your projects are spaced out a little and the nib dries out.  But priming it should work each time while the pen still has paint in it.

For these mugs I did nothing special other than my regular hand writing and a quote that I knew they would appreciate.

and the other one....

The way these pens work for glassware/porcelain that is to be washed, is that it is painted on and left to dry as per the instructions on the pack, and then you bake it in a low oven (Porcelaine 150 is baked at 150 degrees as the name suggests)  It is then dishwasher safe when washed on Economy (lower heat) in your dishwasher.  (If you are worried though I would just hand wash!)

Pebeo Glass and Porcelain Painting

I must tell you.  I have never painted glassware or porcelain before, and I really didn't think it would work for me,  But I tried it, and now my brain is flooding with ideas! :-)

Pebeo Glass Paints come in the form of little tubs of paint, or paint pens, in a few different nib sizes to vary the detail in your work.  They are fun!

Both types- Vitrea (for glass) and Porcelaine (for porcelain) are drawn/painted on.  Left for 24 hours to dry and then put in the oven at either 150/160 degrees (depending on which one you are using)  You can use either on either surface too.  Porcelaine can go on glassware and vise versa.

I decided I would paint a Salad Bowl for my Mum as a Gift.  It turned out quite nice, and will be great on the table for years to come as it turned out!

It started out a plain old pasta/salad bowl for about $20 from Big W.  Not much of an exciting gift!

I scribbled on some flower shapes, getting the feel for the pen, which is much like a gold or silver paint pen, the types you have to depress to get the ink flowing.  I just kept a piece of scrap plastic (a piece of transparency would work too) next to me, which I used to keep the pen primed with paint.

It doesn't look too great yet, but adding the outline really brings it to life.

I added a couple of colours to the rose and the flowers just to add dimension.  A little red and magenta and some orange and yellow.  I also used two colours of green for the same effects.

I left this layer to air dry, before adding the outlines.

You can add the extra colours to the image wet or dry.  When adding it dry, the new wet paint can tend to 'rewet' the dry, if its manipilated too much,  so you can still blend where you want to.

You can see some blending in the centre of the red flower below.

When that layer is dry I got out the fine Black pen and outlined the image.  It looks much better now!

its not perfect, I did it quite quickly to prevent it looking too precise.  I wanted to keep it loose.

I added little tiny red berries to some of the fronds, and random green dots as fillers around the flowers and other leaves.

Just a note as well..........

This took quite a long time, as the bowl is really large.  and I needed a break between painting sessions.  The lovely part about this paint, is if you make a mistake at this stage, or don't like what you have done, you can wipe it off if its still wet, and can just wash it with a sponge and light scourer if its dry and can start fresh.  That is not great for needing a break between sessions though, as it can damage really easily. if its knocked or not handled carefully.  I decided to protect what I had done by baking it on mid project.  I followed the directions to bake it and then let it sit until I was ready to continue!  Then it is completely safe!

The directions say the product is dishwasher safe.... but after reading about some failures I did notice that it also says on the website to only wash on 'economy' which wont be quite so hot.  My advise to my mum after all this hard work will be to warm wash by hand, just so it has a long life!!!

Here is a sample drawing sheets with some easy breakdowns for how to do this your self.  Its really quite simple!!!

Thanks for stopping in today.  Hope you will give this a try.  People love handmade gifts and you can turn something plain into something treasured with glass paints!

Birds of a Feather

Fancy feathers with Mepxy Markers.

An easy and fun way to spruce up plain white feathers to add to craft projects such as Hear pieces, scrapbooking and home decor such as Dream catchers .
For this you'll need a selection of Mepxy Markers, white feathers, craft matt or scrap paper. And for some special additions, why not try some Schmincke Aquarelle masking fluid and Schmincke Rich Gold powder/dust.

Colours I used in the Mepxy range :Y11 Pale Yellow, W13 Peach Whip, N25 Natural, W37 Chocolate
Bright colours: B29 Ultramarine, B06 Peacock Blue, C49 Vivid Blue, C05 Cyan, L09 Fresh Green, G07 Vivid Green, W29 Sienna.

Here we go.

It's as simple as taking your marker and working your colours up the length of the feather. I started with W37 chocolate. Overlap the next colour, which was Peach Whip W13, then Natural N25 and finally Y11 Pale Yellow. It's a good idea to play with the colours on some Canson Bleedproof paper to work out how the colours will look on the feather.

Blending with your 00 blender marker really helps the colours flow into one another. Oh! And it's ideal to work on a craft matt , but if you don't have on some paper underneath will suffice.
You can create so many looks, and by researching birds and all the different colours there are, the possibilities are endless.
By adding stripes or spots with a darker colour  the feathers can be personalised.
Blending with your Mepxy 00 softens the stripes and they look less 'stripy'.

Next , let's try some Schmincke masking fluid. A few dots  or stripes of this will mask the original white base colour. The fluid is blue when wet, and becomes clear once dry. Once completely dry, add Mepxy markers. Once you're done with the colour, simply rub off the masking dots.
Why not try some Schmincke gold dust as well. Just spray a little water on the end of your fester and pick up a little gold dust on your brush and tap the dust over the wet area. Once dry it looks amazing.

Here's how the gold dust looks when
dusted over the water. It becomes
liquid gold. Awesome!

Here's a few of the different  feathers I created and with the stem trimmed, I added them to some beads
and and thread to create a boho hair clip.

Heres the Rainbow feathers, created with the colours you see here. They are also listed in the supplies.

I hope you have fun with this, and  you enjoy coming up with different  projects and ways to use your personalised feathers .

See you next time
